When I was actively Dingy Racing I remember being in long conversations
about weather it was better to have black anodized masts and booms
verses silver. One theory was that the black would heat up the metal a
cause it be less dense and therefore lighter. Needless to say large
quantities of beer, or maybe rum were involved...

I have been looking at some 28-200 2.8 ED (IF) lenses.
Some are black, some are silver. Is there a difference?
If you use the white ones, everyone thinks you're using Canon. If you
use the black ones, everyone thinks you're using Nikon.
In theory painting the lens white, silver, or cream keeps it from
heating up as much when used outdoors in direct sun. I've never seen
any tests confirming that, though.
