I can understand your sentiments of holding those older lens for the 
very pleasure of the feeling they give. They do give a 
different "feel" or "touch" and this goes true for about any 
manufacturer: manual focus lenses display superios handling. My FA 
lenses were consumer optics and very plastickry indeed. Nevertheless 
certain AF lenses do offer better optical performance despite the 
downside of being less pleasant to use in manual focus mode. I can 
recall purchasing lots of manual focus Pentax lenses for peanuts and 
loving to own and handle them. But the truth is that I took most - 
and best - shots with FA consumer zomms at that time. Strange thing 
to reflect upon.
