Have you ever noticed that in low light that when the lens stops down you cannot get an accurate exposure reading because you are beyond the meters rated sensitivity? That's what JCO's referring to. Open aperture metering is more accurate because the meter is more accurate if there is more light, even taking into account possible inaccuracies with mechanical linkages.

Have you understood that the lens only stops down *momentarily* to meter and again *momentarily* to take the picture, and that at all other times it is open?
