Now I'm significantly more annoyed by the film bodies with this mount, as they do not have the workarounds that the digital bodies do, and thus are essentially unusable with K and M lenses unless an external meter is used. I'd love to add an *ist to my collection in order to have a relatively modern film body, but until pentax adds the Green Button functionality to the *ist, it's not an option.

Have you considered a PZ-1 or PZ-1p as a relatively modern, well-stocked-with-features, film body? I think it's the closest film sibling to the *istD.

It lacks decent AF. Other than that it's an option. But it's not comparable to the D really, being rather further up-spec than the D is (Faster shutter, flash sync and framerate for starters). The *ist is it's closest sibling, the only major differences are the viewfinder, hyper-program and PC-Sync.

I disagree about the lacking decent AF, but setting that aside, my reason for considering it similar to the *istD is that it has hyper-program and hyper-manual modes and the controls include two dials for adjusting shutter speed and aperture, and the famous green or IF button. So, of the Pentax film SLRs I've used, I found the PZ-1 the closest in camera control interface to the *istD. Except that with the PZ-1 you also have the option of using the aperture ring. (They also look alike -- tasteful, serious-looking all-black cameras labelled PENTAX.)

Agree the PZ-1(p) have some higher specs than the *istD. OTOH, I think electronic DOF preview and having a PC sync terminal are upgrades relative to the PZ-1.

Now, admittedly I've never seen a film *ist in person. Does it have the two dials and the two hyper modes also? And a button to set exposure automatically in hyper manual?

About the AF -- as I rarely use any kind other than single centre-sensor autofocus even on cameras that have other options, the fact that it's the only option on the PZ-1 doesn't bother me. I guess if you prefer multiple AF sensors, that might cause you to consider the PZ-1's autofocus less than ideal.
