These numbers are a combination of various sources, including the Luminous Landscape tests, DPReview testing, several PopPhoto articles and my own experience. As such, they are pretty general numbers and are both DSLR specific (the smaller sensors in P&S's noise issues cause them problems as compared to film) and don't take into account addball sensors like the Fuji and Foveon sensors.

Where do you get these numbers from? How about some attribution?

6MP can equal most 35mm films in average conditions although it can outperform most faster film in average conditions. Of course, the best films can outperform 6-8MP iun ideal conditions, and that is what's reflected in the spec sheets. It takes 10+MP to exceed 35mm film under idea; conditions, and as the 1Ds mkII has shown you can match 120 film with 17MP.

At 10MP and up the lens becomes the real limiting factor on performance with 35mm and APS lenses.
