I recently went through the same process. My old unit came
with no carriers. So I built a bunch out o some rather rigid
poster board. Seems to work fine, even for 4x5, and very well
for 6x9 and 35mm.
As far as alignment, I was in Midwest Photo Exchange Friday and
saw a bubble level unit that's designed for just that purpose.
It was priced *well-below* $70, if memory serves. www.mpex.com
I aligned mine by using a regular carpenter's level and just spending
a lot of time with it. (My enlarger is an old (really old--no place
for filters) DeJur that can get out of alignment with just a little
wear in the key areas.)
I also got an old Kodak 161mm lens @ Midwest. They have a drawer of
$20 used enlarger lenses. Some are pretty nice for the price.
