He has continuous stop down metering, the same as if he was using an M42
lens and adapter on a *ist-D[*], with the
function dial set to Av. Maybe a bit more convenient. (Good thing it's
got a good finder, the view can be a bit dim).

Yep, the DS was the real breakthrough. I expect a lot of the old 50mm
f/2.0 lenses are going onto old K1000s and such for photo students, but
most of the really desirable lenses are being used on the ist-DS. I've
even heard of one guy who's put manual focus Pentax lenses on his Canon
1D-II (For some reason, he's happy with his set up even though it's even
*less* convenient than the green button system on the ist-D! Horrors!)
