In many cases, they also be inferior or unusable. A lot of older lenses just

don't image well on digital for a variety of reasons having to do with 
digital sensors being somewhat less forgiving of certain lens aberations 
than film, chromatic aberation being the main culprit.
I have a few older lenses that exhibit this, to the point of being junk 
lenses on digital, even though they are excellent performers on film.
