The point is, the $650 cameras you mention do not have the same specs as
the $3300 FF one. The only 12MP APS-C camera I know actually costs
40-50% more than That 12MP FF, and over half of That Other 16MP FF [ ... ]
Disagree. Actually, dismissing sensor, 5D has WORSE parameters than 20D, they are
rather between $650 bodies and 20D (3 fps vs 5 fps in 20D, 1/200 flash sync vs
1/250).
Yes, there are those parameters, of course. Actually, it seems like they
have kept the *same* transfer speed which translates to fewer fps due to
the higher pixel count. But, it is still clear to me that the camera is
meant as a model between the the 20D and 1D (not Ds) - and in almost
every other aspect than what you mention, it does seem to have "better"
parameters than the 20D. It has significantly *larger* buffer, even
thought it isn't faster, a larger LCD screen (but maybe you always
expect that of new bodies), slightly improved AF, better viewfinder
coverage, and so on and so forth. Not to mention the fact that it does
not have any silly "picture" modes, as far as I can tell...
And 5D has non weather-sealed body, it is not comparable in any way to D2X
which you were thinking of. Similar in parameters and build quality to D2X FF camera is
1Ds for about $7400 - the difference is enough to buy hi-end DX 17-55/2.8 and VR
70-200/2.8 AF-S lenses...
True. But like I said, the 1Ds is "only" twice the price, or actually a
little less. And it has slightly better specs than the D2X, as far as I
can tell - more pixels, higher ISO rate... So the nearest comparable FF
body has more pixels and is less than twice the price. What I said, really.
Right now it is expected that market will shift to buying DSLRs as digicams will be more
and more replaced by cameras in mobile phones. And before price of FF cameras would
fall to your predicted level, there will be many millions of APS-C cameras sold, creating
standard like it was with 35 mm film before II W.W.
Maybe, maybe not. We'll see. All I'm saying is that it's far too early
to say anything definite about the APS-C format (which the Nikons
technically aren't, as far as I know, but the difference is perhaps too
small to mention.) And no, I'm far from sure that FF will reach the
price I suggested anytime soon, but let's not forget that there is
something between 1x and 1.5x or 1.6x, too. Something I'd really like to
see, is a 1.2x crop, just because I like round numbers ;-) And I
wouldn't be surprised if the norm becomes there is no norm, i.e. that
there won't be classes of cameras with exactly the same picture format
as with film, but rather variations across the lineup for a given lens
mount, and also different formats for different producers.
