Hi all,
I do not know much about the MZ-S but have a comment and a couple of
questions, all centred around the issue of flash synch at fast
shutter speeds. I think the camera in that class and price tag could
have a faster shutter - like the one in the Z-1P. While absence of
top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec is not limiting, but I feel that
1/250 sec for standard flash synch would be preferable over 1/180 sec
offered by the MZ-S. Sometimes this tiny difference can be one
between having a picture or not - if you use fill-in flash in
daylight to illuminate something in the foreground against bright
background and thus reduce excessive contrast. Of course Pentax
offers now synch at all shutter speeds but anyone who has ever used
that feature on any camera knows how drastically flash range gets
limited when you shift from the last shutter speed with regular synch
to the first one that uses FP-synch.
Now questions about FP-synch in the MZ-S and the matching Pentax
flash:
1) Is light TTL-metered when this feature is used? I ask this
question only because some years ago Nikon offered FP-synch but this
was purely manual and the user had to adjust flash output to get
correct exposure for a given camera-object distance, whereas both
Minoltas and Canons meter light in HSS (as Minolta calls) or FP (as
Canon terms it) flash-synch mode. By the way, Olympus was the first
manufacturer to offer this feature many years ago in the OM-4.
2) Is FP-synch a default feature of the external flash (like it is in
Minoltas - when you turn the flash on, HSS mode is enabled; the user
can turn it off) or an extra feature which can be enabled by the user
at any moment (like it is in Canons)?.
I hope you do not find my comment and questions very silly. Even if
they are, I can always hope you will not tell me given the quality of
people who participate in this list. I joined the list several months
ago but did not fail to notice that this is the best-mannered list
and the cultural capital of the Internet.
Best regards
Jarek
