Like Rob, I've been using rechargeable NI-Mh batteries without the grip, and
have only once had a strange problem - the camera locked up when using a
Sigma zoom, but I think it was because I had not set the AF selector to one
of the AF settings after using a manual focus lens. Switching it off and
putting an MF lens on cured it, and once I got home it resumed working
perfectly.
The only thing I have found is that the battery life is not very long, far
less than some users have reported: in one session, at my grand-daughters'
birthday, I had to change batteries after only 35 frames. Possibly because
I was using the review screen quite a lot to check that I had got the shot I
wanted...
In general I find the battery status indicator will be at half-full for
quite some time, but will then suddenly show empty, when you really do have
to change batteries.

Hence my asking if she she using the external battery pack.
I'll bet that's the source of at least half the complainants problems in
this
thread. I've not had a spot of bother in nearly two years powering my *ist
D
sans grip with well maintained Ni-MH cells.
