By the way, I almost always convert to the maximum size that the converter will produce -- a 144 megabyte 16-bit file. Adobe has said that upsizing (interpolating) in the RAW converter is superior to doing it after the fact in PhotoShop. I do any post processing, such as the sharpening at 16-bit. I sometimes add a little fine tuning of midrange contrast with curves or some adjustment of highlight and shadow with the highlight/shadow tool. I then change the mode to 8-bit and save as a 72 megabyte tiff. I usually downsize the image for the web as well (13 inches on the long side, 72 ppi) with bicubic sharper and do a "save for web" to produce the jpeg.

I haven't changed many of the default settings, but I rarely leave them as they are in processing. They're only meant to provide a baseline. I did change sharpness to 15, because I do most of the sharpening with unsharp mask after conversion. The other settings are okay as a baseline. Generally I start by setting exposure as high as necessary without getting into clipped highlights. If I need more midrange brightness, I increase the brightness slider setting. I set the shadow slider to eliminate any clipping of shadow information or incrrease the density of the blacks as needed. At that point I set temperature and tint to achieve the color balance I want. Sometimes after setting temperature and tint, I'll go back and readjust brightness a bit, until I'm pleased with the rendering. On high ISO shots, such as those at 800 or 1600, I'll sometimes set color noise and luminosity as needed.

I finally upgraded one of my PCs to where I can run PS CS2. I'll now be shooting RAW & was wondering if any of the PS guru's here have any comments on the *istD camera profile in ACR 3.0 or 2.4.
Do you use the default settings in PS or what?
