Pentax has promised but not announced a *ist-D replacement.
So the question becomes in many respects, if one WANTS to purchase the
new Pentax body (assuming there's one forthcoming... I mean I actually
expect to see one, but has Pentax officially let us know?), does it
offer enough bang for the buck, compared to the competition? If one
I don't expect it to be an upgraded *ist-D however I expect it will
something a bit different, more like the MZ-S as compared to the ZX/MZ
series of cameras. It will have to have a higher pixel count and faster
buffers, everything else is speculation, considering you'd have to
replace all your lenses eventually if you moved to another system, I'd
say bang for the buck would be highest with Pentax, but that may not be
in your best interests.
bought a higher spec'd competitors body, could one also live with
slowly rebuilding their lens collection, or use lower priced older
manual focus lenses?
The only other system you'd have a hope in hell of doing that with is
Nikon. Not a very good hope unless you bought a really high end body,
(do they even have such a digital body?), Nikon s backward compatibility
isn't anything near Pentax's.
It's a matter of wants and needs vs. money to spend... like everything
it sems...

I wouldn't exactly call the 5D non-Pro. It might not be spec'd like a
1-series body, but with the cost and specs, it's certainly the 1Ds
for less-solvent pro's.
I'm expecting the next serious Pentax DSLR to be spec'd like a D200.
Just like the D and D100 so resemble each other. And I also expect to
see a ugraded DS2 in the spring/summer, with a bigger buffer and more
speed at a minimum, but probably also 8-9MP.
