When I'm just using a single lens, I find that a handlebar bag is the simplest way to go. Keeps it up high and within easy reach after stopping the bike. I use an old piece of fleece to line the bag and to keep the camera from getting scratched up in there.

It's funny how quickly that little bit of weight (camera with kit lens) adds up to making the steering feel "heavy", though... I don't know how your bike would behave if there was a handlebar bag on it which was big enough to handle the camera *and* a few lenses.

That's what I used to do when I rode a lot. I got so used to having the handlebar bag with a Nikon FM and two lenses in it that when I took it off the steering felt funny.

That bag had a quick release mounting and shoulder strap eyelets on it, which I supplemented with belt strap for casual hiking.
