i always use plugins. then i can automate them. also, if a plugin won't support 16-bit images, then they have to be really, really good, and nearly unique, before i consider them. shooting RAW is wasted if you have to work in 8-bit mode. you might as well shoot JPEGs then.
Thats a little extreme. At the moment, there is only one printer that I know of that supports 16 bit printing. If you have to convert to 8 bit at some point, does it really matter if the noise reduction is done before or after the conversion?
