I expect it does, however, I haven't tried any experiments to test my
hypothesis.

Thats a little extreme. At the moment, there is only one printer that
I know of that supports 16 bit printing. If you have to convert to 8
bit at some point, does it really matter if the noise reduction is
done before or after the conversion?
