It is a form of psychological abuse in itself. Once again very few abused children are abused by strangers, usually it is the parents or someone else in the household. Actually kids can deal with physical abuse better than they can with psychological abuse which causes life-long problems.

I had a small and relatively forgettable incident a while ago. A mother and her kid was across the photo counter from me. The kid was staring at me kinda bug eyed, so I aknowledged her presence to him by saying hi, or some such.
Pretty innocuous.
She immediately went shy and hid in her mother's coat tails.
Momma said she was afraid of men.
Not being one to hold my tongue, I asked her if this was a healthy fear to instill in her child, and did she intend for the kid to enter a convent?
Needless to say, I wasn't appreciated.
My life is like that sometimes.
