I wouldn't be so quick to assume that the internal supply requirements should 
correlate with the external supply requirements. None of us have any idea how 
much control, protection and regulation circuitry exists on the external power 
input. As an engineer I tent to adhere to the specifications outlined by the 
designers of the equipment.
