I'm just wondering how big these companies imagine the DSLR market
really is. I mean doesn't the vast majority just purchase a small P&S?
Do they really want to carry around a DSLR with a crappy lens when
they are going to get basically the same picture quality at the size
they normally print/view? And if the market is mainly for amateur or
prosumer, then its gonna require lenses to back it up. Where are sony
and panasonic going to go for that?

if Pentax thinks competition is tough now, wait until Sony and Panasonic
enter the market next year. for a little while anyway, those companies
can afford to lose more money gaining market share than Pentax is worth.
DSLR prices will plummet, which is good for consumers overall, but bad
for profits for the vendors, and really bad for the owners of equipment
from companies that don't make it. think of the Contax DSLR owners.
Kodak DSLRs owners at least can change their body to Nikon or Canon, as
appropriate, to buy a body that matches their lens mount.

They are dragging their ass along the ground at the moment, they are a
far cry
from even keeping up with the bottom end from other manufacturers.
