Doesn't your 1D have a 1.3 crop factor as opposed to the istD's 1.5.
Everything equal your viewfinder image would be noticably larger than
the istD's. (Yeh, I know you know this, Cotty, but I figured it would
not be obvious to everyone who read your post).

I have to say that, maybe I'm a dolt, but several months ago I started
looking down other camera brand viewfinders to try and see what the hoopla
was all about, and to tell the truth I did not see a noticeable difference
between them and Pentax.
There's only one way to do it. You get two cameras together, side by
side, hold them both up, one in each hand, vertically, and present them
to each eye, together. Doesn't matter which lens is attached. The
relative sizes of the finders will be obvious.
I held Cesar's *ist D and my 1D mark II up together and i could not
detect a difference in the finder sizes. Cesar reckoned that the *ist D
was bigger by a scosh, but he would say that wouldn't he ;-)
Bottom line - the Pentax viewfinder is about the best for the buck.
