You could always buy a clip-on meter if you don't want to carry a
hand-held one.  Or just take some meter readings on what you feel is an
average day, then work around that in the future.  After a while of doing
this you'll probably get pretty good as guesstimating proper exposure.  I
try to go with what feels right when I'm shooting without a meter.  I get
some really awful exposures occasionally, but I've improved a lot since I
started.
