I didn't think of that, but it makes sense. The last roll was shot
entirely with the M85/2 and still showed the inconsistent gaps between
frames, so I think it's the film advance. Thanks for the insight,
though. I'll keep an eye on that and see if I can tell any difference
between lenses.
Yer a cruel man, Godders. The biggest dimension that the lens has to
cover is the _diagonal_ of the frame. Bigger than either side. As the
image from the lens is circular, the overlap of the sides is considerable.
Apart from fisheyes (which are very wide angle but do not cover the
frame) and those lenses that have a rectangular mask, which might affect
frame size, the frame size is generated by the cutout in the shutter.
As stated above, this is excessively covered by all "normally" designed
lenses.

The only 35mm camera I ever owned that has exactly precise frame

Frame spacing with an interchangeable lens camera can vary a little
bit when you go from a telephoto to a wide lens. This is because a
wide lens will "overshoot" the format gate a little bit due to the
angle that the light path is taking. If you measure the actual
exposed area, between wide and tele lenses there can be as much as
2.5-3.0mm difference in the dimensions of the format, depending on
how extreme a wide angle lens you use.

Hi Scott ...
I've noticed that on my MX cameras as well. Over the years I've
had four
or five MX, and even after a CLA one or another exhibited such
behavior.
Having monitored them over the years it's not been obvious that the
problem
has gotten worse. Keep an eye on it and, if the spacing changes at
all,
send it in for repair.

Howdy, gang! I've noticed over the last dozen or so rolls from
the MX
that frame spacing is not consistent. There's always at least some
space, so the pictures aren't overlapping, but sometimes the spacing
is almost 1/8" which seems wide to me. There's a little extra
play in
the advance lever that I don't notice on the K1000. Is this
something
that can be repaired? Is it anything to be worried about? Or is
this
normal behavior for a twenty-something year old camera?
Thanks!
