Subject: SMCP FA J 18-35mm opinions

2 questions regarding this lens:

1. What does the "J" designation indicate? Does it relate to the lack of an
aperture ring?

Junk.
Actually, I don't have a clue.

2. Are there any current/past owners of this lens who would be prepared to
offer an opinion of same?

It's kinda big, really light for it's size, and is slow at the long end. For that matter, it's slow at the short end as well.
But I like fast primes, so any short zoom is kinda slow.
Optically, it is surprisingly good on the istD, the one I had was quite sharp and contrasty, and I wasn't able to make it flare, even shooting directly into the sun. It will also cover the entire 35mm format, though it is soft in the corners wide open and at the wide end. I let mine go to another list member, in favour of a few fast primes, but I really had no complaints with the lens,
especially at the price they were selling it at.
