I use a little command-line application called halfsize.exe which was written by John Francis that extracts the native JPG file that is embedded in every PEF file. I don't know if it works for anything other than the *ist D but I find it very handy. The way I use it is straight after I DL my PEF files to my PC I run the application then I have a very manageable set of jpg files which are proofs of sorts. They generally display poorer latitude than the PEF files but they give you a very good starting point to sort good from bad particularly in a big edit session like the 4500+ images from my last trip. And when I'm feeling lazy and feel that the use doesn't deserve too much attention to detail I use them for presentation (like this image and my last Q&D pano).
