I've never quite understood why people like the split image screens  
so much. To me, the rangefinder prisms are always "in the way" and an  
annoyance. I find it harder to focus precisely with them, although  
quicker to get 'in the ballpark'. Oh well, personal preference I guess.

What I'd like is a simpler matte screen with a reference grid and a  
center circle to delineate the limited area metering pattern. The  
LL-60 screen that Pentax sells is ok but the grid pattern is broken  
up by the standard screens AF markings, which makes it less  
effective. I bought one for my first DS and use it all the time, it's  
particularly effective when I'm working on a tripod, but didn't  
bother to buy one for the second body.

Hmm. I wonder if I supplied a standard DS screen to Bill Maxwell  
(Maxwell Precision Optics) whether he could apply his magic to it.  
Bill's screens for my old Rolleiflex and Hasselblad cameras were  
always by far and away the best, easiest to focus on, brightest  
screens on the market.
