Marnie, don't use ANY background, just leave the
cover off...
the ambient light in the room will make a nice
smooth dark background.

plastic garbage bag would be bad, too much
reflection... 
the ziplock bag I used for the tiles was just to
keep them from spilling...
not for a background.

I have also placed a piece of white styrofoam
above what I was shooting
and occasionally pieces of colored paper or
something on "stilts" of
whatever was around to keep it totally out of
focus.

play around with it... it's kinda fun
