As I understand it, it's caused by heat build up in the sensor.

I notice it when I take a series of shots in quick succession. The
first 2 or 3 will be fine, anything after that displays lines, as
shown on the "Original Image" of this page:

...that shot was the last of 4 taken for the test.

Noise reduction software like Noise Ninja & Neat Image can help reduce
the effect somewhat.
