IMHO, the safest way to store pictures is to print them on paper.

There is some truth to that -- paper copies. :-) But I think storage devices 
are a little better than they used to be. 

John Shaw recommends at least three backups, actually four:  HD, two on DVD 
(or CD), and separate portable HD (like an external one for a laptop). Actually 
it some senses he recommends more than that, two CD/DVDs in a safe deposit 
box, two at home. But he's a professional photographer.

In my case, it's not great loss if most of my images evaporate.
