Never ever trust your HDD or DVD!
These ultra modern things are made to be SOLD, no to WORK for you.
In my office, i have large amount of dead HDD laying around.
I feel that's probably a little too paranoid, but in some ways I
agree. In 20+ years of running computers, I have had exactly one HDD
go belly up on me. All the rest have been put to pasture long before
failure, their data transferred perfectly to the next, due to speed
and capacity upgrades with newer units.
I also have many CD-R, up to 11 years old now, that are 100%
perfectly readable today.
IMHO, the safest way to store pictures is to print them on paper.
Agree. With good archival paper and ink, and store the paper properly.
