exception to your remarks, but it makes me wonder how "color balance"
concerned I should have been over my decades of shooting slide film.

Depends on the shooting you've been doing. I spent a good portion of the 80s shooting product and fashion photography on slide film. One of the requirements was that the slide had to have colour fidelity with the subject, since it made it that much easier for the press people to get the colour right. If the drafts were screwed up, it was important to me that I had a colour accurate slide to ensure that blame was placed where deserved when a deadline was missed.
