No firmware upgrade needed. It's plug & play :-) It's cheaper to get one of the 3rd party models. I got the Pentax one because my camera shop actually had some in stock, & I was picking up my 77 Ltd, so I was already in a spending mood. I tend to use mine in conjunction with the 2 second self timer/ mirror lock up feature.
