There's an easy way to buy Microsoft Office at a very good price.
Microsoft offers special student pricing. Just sign up for a course at
your local community college..
I bought my first Photoshop (4.0) in a similar way, only I had an existing
student purchase it for me. Paid around $ 150 USD, when it was going for
around $500.

No body is forcing you to buy it.
I certainly wouldn't have bought it for $600.
Complain all you want (not sure who you can complain to that will do any
good)
Pay the $600 if you need the program.
It was offered to me as a way to make my home computer compatible with
what I have @ work.

Microsoft offers special student pricing. Just sign up for a course at
your local community college, any course, and you are officially a
student. I got Microsoft Office for something like $ 150 that way. Many
other software makers offer student pricing, too, and you can even buy
specially priced bundles of software through schools.
