I like the pic as-is. I think any flatness is more of a personal preference, but in this photo it may be exacerbated by the very bright background.
Have you considered cropping just a little off the right - maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the rock?
As to fill flash - when shooting outdoor portraits, their can be some issues with lighting.
I've done some outdoor events before and I find that a touch of fill flash at -1.5 keeps some detail in the shadows, especially in direct sunlight.
