I didn't do a lot of sharpening, the halo effect seems to be from the contrast between the snowy background and the darker deer bodies. (I did try to bring out the deers' faces, (they were both looking at me), but then
the fringing became quite horrific.

local State Park.  Gillette's Castle.  I surprised these two on the
front lawn while I was tramping around looking for a particular shot.  I
didn't get it, and they took off.  The didn't go far...
