Theres nothing wrong trying to shoot varioations of this scene -
even stanting near or in the tripod holes. But this is obviously
something else.
I think you've misinterpreted the reason why they did this.

It has more to do with astronomy than art. They were able to
pinpoint the exact location where AA was standing, and work out the
exact time when the moon would appear in the same location (once
every 19 years). Making the pilgrimage and taking the photo was just
to prove they were right.
Anyway this one is in colour so it wasn't much of a recreation ;)
