Yah, we PJs many times switched film just to be sure not to run out or be at 
a disadvantage if the action heated up. 
Film being the least expensive part of shooting, it was not unusual that out 
of ten roll of exposed (used) film, some of my rolls only had 20 or so shots 
on them. As some have advised, changing film during lulls is smart. 

But hobbyists and amateurs almost always want to wring the last frame out of 
a roll before changing. That often times gets a shooter in trouble.
