I don't check the DVDs/CDs very often, but I occasionally pull a few out and test them. Since the entire library is replicated several times on different media, I check the hard drives as the primary archive repository.

This is one of the major advantages of using large capacity hard drives. Every month or so, I run a verification on the entire library to ensure that no problems have developed. It's a small process that runs a file system verify and a file by file checksum against the last known good, runs in background or overnight as I sleep. I do the two current repository drives on separate nights, one per night.

To do this with hundreds of Gbytes worth of data distributed over many CD or DVD media platters would be a nightmare.

Godfrey,
Have you checked your backups? Sorriest fellow I met at work had 1
1/2 years of tape back-ups that he couldn't read. Seems that he had
some problems writing the back-ups. Since then, I like to test what
I've backed up.
