Defects in manufacturing are a fact of life.
You've articulated three incidences of defects out of, say
conservatively, 5,000 units sold. Let's say we've heard of 40 others.
That's a ~0.8% defect rate.
The industry average on defects in mass produced electronics products
is 2-4. 3% in a run of 5000 units would mean 150 units with defects.
If you know of 150 defective DS bodies in a unit run of 5000, that
would mean that it is at the industry norm for defects: that is,
nothing unusual.
Greater than that by more than 2% and the manufacturer has a problem:
warranty costs go up as a square of the percentage and eat into
profits. Make the above number 600 units in 5000 and I'd agree that
Pentax has a quality control problem.
