I used to own a Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super. it was absolutely awful
at the long end. It was great up to about 200mm and past that the
image degraded terribly. I still cringe thinking about it :-)
Mine was probably not the most current version of the lens so there
may have been some improvement in the later model (one would hope..)
There have been (and still are) several variations of this lens. The prices
also vary widely for the different versions. I have the version optimized
for digital camera use. (It's also the most expensive version.) I think
it's a nice lens, but I never did shoot any resolution targets with any of
my lenses.
I want to mention that there is a company selling these on eBay. They claim
that they are selling the more expensive version optimized for digital
cameras, but their ad shows one of the other versions. It's hard to say
what they are actually selling. The best version has a red ring around the
lens barrel, near the filter threads. In their auction photos, that red
ring isn't present, indicating it was one of the lesser variations of the
lens. I've read that the optimized version with the red ring is decidedly
better than the other versions, but I can't speak from personal experience.
I only have the optimized version, and nothing to compare it to. To me, it
just seems like a nice lens.
take care,
