A soakaway is simply a hole in the ground, about 2 metres deep by 1 metre by 1 metre (maybe a bit bigger depending) filled with rubble (broken bricks/stones/whatever) and then covered over, with a pipe leading into it from a rainwater downpipe, taking rainwater runoff from the roof. It needs to be away from the house, about 15 feet (notice typically Brit way of mixing metric and imperial measurements ;-) The rainwater can't always go down into the mains sewers otherwise it would overload when it rains a lot.
