Hello Kevin.

Having once been a sports photog, I can lend some experience. We used
300/400mm, and 85mm. 300/400 for regular action & 85mm for corners. Of
course, we had pitch access and relatively free movement.
The big glass is usually 2.8 aperture, for fast easy focussing & 1/250 or
1/500th under floodlights or in poor weather.
For regular amateur shots, you can probably get away with lens aperture F4
or faster; film speeds have moved on a tad since the late 80s!

Steer clear of 500mm mirrors - 1. Too long; 2. To slow to focus; 2. Too
little light entering.
Try to seek out the Tokina 100-300 F4 ATX around GBP300 used; the Pentax
300mm F4* lens around GBP350 used.

Kind regards from sunny Brighton

Peter
