I don't know the lens you're talking about, but there's no reason it
shouldn't focus at infinity.
Does this 17mm have provision for back filters? If so, make sure
you're using one, at least the UV one. Back filters are part of the
optical design, and are not optional as filters you mount on the fron
of a lens. The way you describe it it sounds like you're missing it...
