If you're willing to go with an external, the LaCie external drive that
sells for around $250 will do double layer DVD burns as well as single,
so you can store over 8 gig on a single disc. I haven't been using the
double layer discs because they're more than twice as expensive, but I
hope the price eventually drops. It's 16X of course.

NEC DVD burners or the best if all you'll do is burning. The read OK.
LiteOn burners do burn well but read VERY well.
Sony's are Liteons with Sony on it and 2x price.
TDKs/memorex ... are all rebadged Liteons.
