Tripods aren't silly.  That you choose to call them silly indicates that
you don't appreciate how valuable they can be. They are valuable tools for
almost every photographer.  A good one, appropriately chosen, can last a
lifetime, and can be used with long, heavy lenses, medium format as well as
35mm.  The worst "investment" I ever made was an inexpensive tripod.  I
still use it for my digi P&S, but the legs don't extent without wobbling
and the head is terrible.  It's good only for use in a few specific
situations.

Bogen/Manfrotto make decent tripods at reasonable prices, and they offer a
wide variety of heads.  They're a good choice for someone working on a
budget.  Just don't get one that's too small for your needs or that you can
grow out of.  Better to spend a little more and get one you can grow into.
