Why I asked is that with the tab it's impossible to mount it up-side down and what you experienced could be caused by the screen being put in the wrong way. The only other thing I could suggest is that it's still slightly oversized and isn't seating fully? Otherwise it's simply a different thickness than the original screen which would obviously misalign the actual focal plane with the apparent focal plane through the finder.
