I had a Vivitar 24/2.8 once. It was about 10 years ago and I didn't have
a Pentax 24 for comparison so I can't really tell you how it rates on
that basis. Compounding the problem is the fact there may have been
several suppliers who made 24mm lenses for Vivitar (that was certainly
the case for most of their other lenses).

That said, my impression was that an inexpensive prime almost always
beats the pants off an inexpensive zoom.!The Vivitar 24 cost me about
$79.00 new and was so much better than the 28-200 zoom I had at the time
that it started me down the path of prime lenses in general and
eventually Pentax primes in particular :)
