Oh yes they are. Here in the USA, the terms "communist", "socialist",
"social democracy", "social programs", "public education", "free
health care", "public grants to the arts", "NPR", "community center"
and some times "vegetarian" and "car pool" are all used in the same
way.

I'm surprised you didn't get your little flier with all those
definitions when you entered the country.

Sometimes. But actually Socialism is the blanket term which covers much of that (Most of which is actually Social Democracy, or programs which Social Democrats espouce).

Who's not inherently opposed to Social Democracy, but dislikes a number of the more extreme collectivist variations of Socialism.
