Even the term 'actual proof' is open to subjectivity. There's many things
we will never sense directly through our 5 senses, yet we pretty much
believe in their existence. Black holes for instance... in the past,
predicted but undiscovered planets in the solar system.
Thats discovery through oblique means, and not a leap of faith.
IIRC, black holes went undiscovered because we didn't have the technology to
discover them, but that there was obviously something there, because the
gravity of the black hole was causing weird things to happen to things we
could observe.
I believe Pluto was discovered because someone noticed that Neptune wasn't
behaving as predicted, but was being tugged by an unknown gravitational
force.
I tend to believe that if we can't explain something through scientific
means, we should be inventing better science, and not concluding that some
giant invisible hand is steering things.
This should not imply that I have a blind faith in science, though. There is
as much or more bad science as there are bad religions.
