Is he wanting to take pictures of events and friends,
or does it appear he'll want to go out shooting with you?
If it's for convenience, anything with automated modes
would be best. Otherwise, to start with, most any body
will be suitable. I just got a Ricoh KSX from a garage
sale. That (similar to the Sears) is a good body.
The kalimar is pretty light-duty, but that may not matter
to a beginner.
As long as the lenss used are in good shape, and the meter
works, any of them will be suitable to start with.
