My experience suggests that Godfrey is right on this one. The
mathematical computations that try to predict digital performance don't
seem to mesh with real-world results.

I disagree completely. "Far superior" is too much. A perfect negative
with perfect exposure, very low grain, and excellent processing,
drumscanned to 6000ppi, will make a slightly better 12x print than a
similarly high-quality 6Mpixel capture. But not by a noticeable amount
with anything but those perfect negatives.
I've made and hung enough of both together to know that the difference
is indistinguishable without close inspection. In particular, if you
don't use a sturdy tripod, the difference disappears completely.
More importantly, the vast majority of the viewers looking at them
can't tell the difference at all.
